Though I'm not obviously not Glenn, I'll take a shot at that one since it's
a question I've been pondering since I started reading this list a few
weeks ago. I think it's a reaction to some of the other results of
so-called "scientific" approaches to Biblical interpretation, in which
complete rationalism (is there a better word?) is (mis)labelled as
"scientific." When (most notably) the Resurrection was tossed aside as a
result of this approach, I think it created a slippery slope mentality in
many people. If that's the end, they don't want to get started.
I don't think that is the end; I think reading and understanding Scripture
is another one of the countless places in a Christian life where we have to
hold two extremes in tensions. It's a lot easier to take the extreme
position--example: early church debate over whether Jesus was divine or
human. The answer is both, but it's still far too easy to concentrate on
one over the other.
