Here, here! I could not agree more. This topic, I've noticed, has appeared on
this reflector in many different forms, but it all comes down to an increasing
erosion in the teaching of science and math in the schools. As my field is
mathematics, the issue of mathematical illiteracy has been an increasing concern
of mine. From the time I was a graduate student to the present I have noted the
increase of ill-preparedness in incoming first year students. It could be that
I'm reading too much into it, or I'm suffering from "when I was your age"
syndrome, but I find that low-level courses that are taught today, at the pace I
took them, have a lower rate of achievement than in my class. (Actually, I
should point out that I'm only 30 so my experience level is low, i.e. I've only
been teaching 6 years now.)

I guess the point that I really liked about John's post was that Christians in
the science fields should consider being in the forefront of supporting strong
science and math education to children and adults. Several people here have
already mentioned this, but I wanted to help 'fan the flames' a bit. I think
Christians would do well to make science education their issue, especially since
Christians often times come up looking rather foolish on some science areas
(e.g. origins science).

Again I'm not saying anything new here. In fact, I think we have an excellent
cadre of Christians in science here who have and could address this issue
wonderfully. I personally am always looking for ways to participate in such
endeavors. I think giving Christians integrity in science education will enable
us to remove the science vs. religion 'thorn' from our sides and help increase
the spread of the Gospel of Christ.

By the way John thanks for mentioning Tufte & Paulos book. I'm very eager to
bye it and read it.

In Christ,
Jim Turner
