At the risk of being charged with heresy, I have a suggestion for the form of
Psalm 111:10 on the front of Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith.
My study edition of the Bible says "The word Religion does not occur in the
O.T. and `the fear of the Lord' is one of its equivalents. It consists in a
reverent recognition of his majesty and holiness." The Good News version puts
it "The way to become wise is to honor the Lord." and another translation is
"The most important part of wisdom is honoring the Lord." A seminarian friend
said the Hebrew word for fear could be translated as awe, which is from the
Greek and means reverent wonder. Profound reverence and awe, especially
toward God, is one definittion of fear.
Might we not better express our feelings, derived from our pursuit of
science, by "Awe of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."?
