Tour de France 2006 — A Roller Coaster Ride
Below is a detailed table to supplement thebasic table in a page about the Tour de France "Roller Coaster" in 2006.
For each stage, the top row of BLACK numbers
show daily times relative to Floyd Landis; in Stage 19, for example,
Pereiro (+1:29) was 1 minute and 29 seconds slower than Landis, but
Kloden (- :30) was 30 seconds faster than Landis.
comment: Notice that almost all of these
black numbers are + or 0 ; the
only exceptions are Kloden (Stage 19), Rogers (15 seconds in the initial Time
Trial and
Stages 1-6), two "breakaways" that were allowed in Stages 10 and 13
because the other top riders didn't think Dessel (in 10) and Pereiro (in 13)
were strong enough to stay ahead of them (but everyone except Landis was wrong
about
Pereiro)
and
in Stage
16 where all of them finished many minutes ahead of Landis. Basically,
except for Stage 16 (where a temporary "hydration and/or nutrition deficiency" happened
in the
physiology
of
Landis,
with
the cells of his
body running low on water and/or glycogen) Landis was the most consistently
fast
rider throughout the three weeks, not just in Stage 17.
In some stages there is a second row of BLACK numbers,
which are "time bonuses" that are awarded after the stage is over, instead of
being
measured
by
a
stopwatch as on the top row; in
Stage 11, for example, Menchov finished first (bonus = 20 seconds) but only a
fraction
of
a second
ahead
of
Landis (so
on the
top
row
their
times are the same) who
finished
third
(bonus
=
8
seconds) so the bonus of Menchov
is "-12" (12 s faster than Landis) while everyone else is "+8" (8
s slower).
The RED numbers show the
overall cumulative time relative to Landis. After Stage 13, for example,
Pereiro (-1:29) was 1:29 ahead of Landis, but Kloden (+2:29) was 2:29 behind
Landis.
The BLUE numbers show the overall
cumulative time relative to the leader after this stage. For example, after
Stage 13 the leader was Pereiro, with Landis (+1:29) at 1:29 behind, while Kloden
(+3:58) is 3:58 behind Pereiro, since (as you can see in the RED numbers)
he was 2:29 behind Landis, who was 1:29 behind Pereiro, and "2:29 + 1:29
= 3:58".
The GREEN numbers (in the lowest
row) are explained just below this row.

The GREEN numbers above show each rider's cumulative time (relative to Landis) for each type of stage — time trials (green background in the cells, as in Stage 19), flat stages (gray bg as in 13), mountains (blue background as in 15-17) — and the TOTAL time difference. (note: Pereiro accidentally gained 2 seconds in Stage 20, due to unusual spacing in the peolton, so his final time was +:57)
