Even the word sounds slightly slimy. “Al-gae” — especially when articulated slowly, is a sort of squishy, guttural utterance. Yet algae are one of the most useful and versatile organisms on this planet, where animals breathe the oxygen algae pump into the atmosphere and drink the water algae help strip of excess carbon dioxide and inorganic nutrient waste.
